New Two-Story Classroom Building

The new two-story classroom building at Willow Glen Elementary School is the second phase of an extensive program to modernize this neighborhood campus. The two-story wings are uniquely stacked by placing 30’ x 32’ classrooms over 24’ x 40’ classrooms. This approach allows the building to step down to one-story scale in multiple places reflecting the scale of the neighborhood. In addition, the east wing carefully steps around the existing redwood trees, which continues to break down the scale as well as preserve the trees. The architectural expression of the building uses deep-set window pockets, clay-tile roofing, shaped-end rafters, and tile wainscot to provide “old-world charm” and a contemporary expression sympathetic with the adjacent historic buildings.
